Process Details

  • A 1:1 scale model is first produced from ABS material using 3D printing technology. For the sculpture’s surface, 2.0mm-thick 304 stainless steel sheets are marked and cut based on the model; the metal is then shaped through manual forging—involving approximately 3,000 hammer strikes per square meter—followed by seamless welding of the sections. Flat steel components are precision-cut via laser based on Rhino software designs and assembled. The subsequent mirror-polishing process begins with grinding down weld seams and forging marks using 80-grit sandpaper, followed by progressive smoothing with sandpaper grits of 120, 320, 600, 800, 1200, and 2000. A sisal wheel with purple polishing compound is used to remove initial grinding marks, followed by a wool wheel to eliminate marks left by the sisal wheel. Finally, a cloth wheel with green and white polishing compounds is used for the finishing polish to achieve a mirror-like surface. Internally, a galvanized square-tube framework is installed to match the sculpture’s dimensions, enhancing wind and seismic resistance, with anti-rust treatment applied to all weld joints.
Design Philosophy

  1. Exploration and Growth
Centered on the imagery of a youth sitting atop the Earth, the design conveys curiosity about the world, a spirit of exploration, and the boundless potential for growth.
  2. Knowledge and Companionship
The juxtaposition of books and a puppy symbolizes the accumulation of knowledge and emotional companionship throughout the learning journey.
  3. Global Connection
Using the Earth as a central element signifies connections that transcend geography and culture, embodying a public art spirit of openness, freedom, and a global perspective.
