Oversized Sculpture: A Mirrored Circle Shaped by Water

Oversized sculpture changes the scale of a simple circle until it becomes something architectural. A broad stainless steel ring rises from the ground with a twist, framing open sky and distant surroundings within its mirrored edge. Water descends through the center rather than sitting beside the form, giving the custom sculpture a sense of motion that contrasts with the calm certainty of its geometry.

The circle has no obvious beginning or end, yet the shifting reflections ensure that the work never feels fixed. From one angle, the oversized sculpture appears almost weightless; from another, its reflective band becomes a substantial metallic arc. Developed as a custom sculpture, the proportions, water flow, and relationship between solid structure and open center can be calibrated without weakening the clarity of the original ring.

	Details van het proces A 1:1 scale model is first produced from ABS material using 3D printing technology. For the sculpture’s surface, 2.0mm-thick 304 stainless steel sheets are marked and cut based on the model; the metal is then shaped through manual forging—involving approximately 3,000 hammer strikes per square meter—followed by seamless welding of the sections. Flat steel components are precision-cut via laser based on Rhino software designs and assembled. The subsequent mirror-polishing process begins with grinding down weld seams and forging marks using 80-grit sandpaper, followed by progressive smoothing with sandpaper grits of 120, 320, 600, 800, 1200, and 2000. A sisal wheel with purple polishing compound removes initial grinding marks, followed by a wool wheel to eliminate marks left by the sisal wheel. Finally, a cloth wheel with green and white polishing compounds is used for the finishing polish to achieve a mirror-like surface. Internally, a galvanized square-tube framework is installed to match the sculpture’s dimensions, enhancing wind and seismic resistance, with anti-rust treatment applied to all weld joints. The outdoor sculptures utilize 24V low-voltage LED light sources, eliminating the risk of electric shock. Advanced power supply and control systems enable the lighting to synchronize with the rhythm of the music, producing color-changing and flashing effects. Calculate the drainage volume and head, and use a high-quality, reputable brand 304 stainless steel submersible pump to achieve stable water supply and pressure.
